1 attended (est.) – No rating yet We are going to rally in front of the Hotel Pennsylvania. We will be yelling slogans, talking to people and the press and handing out fliers. Will last from 9am-11am sharp. Google Map Location: http://www.tinyurl.c 1) Dress warmly. I wear 5 layers myself and it is going to be very cold outside. Even if you think it is warm, you can take layers off instead of freezing your but off. If you feel too cold, tell us and we will pick up your slack while you run into the Hotel Lobby to warm up. 2) Do not worry about bringing fliers. We have some at our website. (http://www.savetheh 3) Respect the law. This is a rally, not a riot. We do not want a negative image at this event. We will tell you when you get there what property lines to walk on and if so, deal with the authorities in an appropriate manner. Here is a video detailing if they give you trouble, which we do not think they will, but you never know: http://www.youtube.c 4) Speak loudly! Do not mumble. If you need inspiration, look at videos of other rallies and preachers on how they present their stuff: (http://www.youtube. Not only will you be doing a good thing, but we are going to have FREE DONUT HOLES for people who show up! That and we expect media attention, so if you ever wanted to be in the papers or on TV, this is your chance! The Hotel Pennsylvania was built in 1919 and has a very rich history. It has been home to many a "big band" concert in its early years and was the inspiration for the famous Glenn Miller song "PEnnsylvania 6-5000," a phone number that still rings at the Hotel Pennsylvania switchboard. The building itself is filled with hidden corridors, rooms, and even floors. Being right across the street from Penn Station (New York's main train station), it's extremely easy to get to for those coming to New York for the first time. And because it's not an overly expensive place to stay, it's proven very popular for travelers from all over the world. In early 2007, the real estate firm Vornado Realty Trust announced plans to demolish the hotel, replacing it with an office tower and a generic box of ads, forever destroying part of our city's cultural history in favor of what critics call "Times Square Junior." We at the Save Hotel Penn Foundation believe there is already enough Times Square a few blocks uptown, and that our city cannot afford to repeat the mistake of 1964 and Penn Station on any level. We are currently working closely with the New York City Government and the local community to get the Hotel Pennsylvania preserved as a landmark protecting it against demolition. www.savethehotel.org |

No rating yet Last week's meeting of the local Community Board 5 in New York City resulted in a 6-1 vote to pursue landmark status for the Hotel Pennsylvania, home of the HOPE conferences, and a magnet for tourists from all over the globe for nearly a century. This means the matter will be heard in front of the full board this coming Thursday. A strong turnout is essential and those who can't attend can still participate. The fight to save the hotel faces an uphill battle for a number of reasons. It simply is not luxurious enough for many tastes. The rooms are not generally huge as they are quite old. And while the outside of the structure is quite impressive, much of the inside has been changed and refurbished over the decades. Many New Yorkers simply don't see the need for another old structure to be preserved. But New Yorkers are also the least likely to benefit from the hotel in the first place. People from all over the world stay there when visiting New York because of its remarkable accessibility (right across the street from Penn Station) and prices that are about half that of other hotels. It is very unlikely we would be able to find another venue in New York to hold HOPE conferences that wouldn't cost many times more. The same holds true for all sorts of other events that have chosen this particular hotel. So, regardless of what many think of the architecture and the current condition of the place, there is history and there is significance. Most of all, there is a need. That need will certainly not be filled by yet another huge financial tower. If you'd like to speak at the meeting on Thursday, it starts at 6 pm and will be at the Fashion Institute of Technology at 227 West 27th Street at 7th Avenue, Building "C", Haft Auditorium, 2nd Floor. People who wish to speak on behalf of the hotel's preservation will have three minutes in which to do so. You must sign up upon arrival if you wish to do this. For those who can't attend (including those of you from overseas who make the hotel your home when coming to HOPE), there are two ways in which you can participate. You can send mail to us and we will bring a printout to the meeting on Thursday or you can email the community board directly expressing your concerns. Please be nice and articulate. These people can be very helpful. |

No rating yet --Purpose-- We will meet in the food court near the pay phones. You will know it is us because we will be handing out Save Hotel Penn fliers and possibly stickers. If someones says its a "2600 Meeting" then you are at the right place, because we are going to be using a friend's meeting space to discuss about Save Hotel Penn, many of which these "2600 Meeting" people are also interested in our cause. We will discuss the upcoming full board meeting at FIT on November 8th, ideas for promoting our selfs and if or not we should hold a strike in front of the Hotel Penn to give more direct public awareness of our cause! See you all there! Bring ideas and full of spirit! The easiest way by far for most people in the area to get to Citigroup is to take the subway. From Pennsylvania (commonly known as Penn) Station, and from the New York City Port Authority, the E train is quickest and easiest. Just hop on an uptown (meaning northbound - uptown means North and downtown means South) E train, and get off at the Lexington Avenue station. Lexington Avenue Subway Station exits right underneath the Citigroup building, just outside the doors, in their small outdoor corner patio thing. You exit the station, and you?re standing at the front doors. It couldn?t be simpler! From Grand Central Station, take the uptown 6 train just one stop to the Lexington Avenue station. Or, just walk one block East to Lexington Avenue, and then eight blocks uptown (North) on Lexington Avenue, and you?ll reach 53rd and Lexington. Citigroup is the corner with wide stairs leading downward into a cut-out corner of the building. Due to the building?s landmark status(landmark status is our first goal for Hotel Penn), its occupation by a large financial institution, and the current political climate, there are security tables with airline-style x-ray tables set up. These are used to x-ray bags as people enter the food court. Keep in mind as you pack your bags for the day, they will be x-rayed, and they may ask you to open your bag and show the contents. The security staff also forbids photography inside the building. If the security guards see you taking a photo, they will likely tell you to stop. Whether or not they have the right to do this is debatable, and answers are currently being sought through the proper channels. Until we are sure of our rights to photograph inside the lobby, we will follow this rule. http://nyc2600.net/a |
